Choosing print and mail

To change to the filing method, take the following steps:

  1. Click the File tab at the top of the screen.
  2. Click Next until you see this screen that reads, “Meet your new best friend, free e-filing.”
  3. By clicking Next, you’ll automatically set the return for e-filing. If you want to print and mail, you should check the checkbox there.

Print and mail instructions

If you choose print and mail as your filing option, we’ll include mailing instructions when you print the return. This will include where to mail the return and what to include with it.

You’ll need to attach copies of your W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and any other tax forms that have federal withholdings. The forms that need to be attached will be printed with the mailing instructions.

Federal:

  • The IRS mailing address to use depends on what 1040 form you file, where you live, and whether you’re sending a payment with your tax return.
  • The IRS provides a website that will help you determine what address to use.

State:

  • The state mailing address will be printed on the cover page of your state return. If you can’t find this information, please contact your state Department of Revenue to get the correct mailing address.
  • The mailing address for the state return is listed on the instruction page of the printed copy of the return. Use these instructions to view the mailing address:
    • 1. Find your account in the OLAT.
    • 2. Choose the account and click View PDF.
    • 3. Find the State Tax Return Filing Instructions page. The address is listed in the Mailing Address section.

Some states have indicated they will allow an exclusion for unemployment income.  We’ve outlined how to find out what your state is doing and the instructions for claiming the exclusion in our Online product.

Find your state’s information and determine if they’re ready to allow you to claim it.

  • If your state is ready to file today, prepare and file your federal and state return today!
  • If your state isn’t ready today, there are two options you can choose from:
    • Option A: File your federal return today only and wait to prepare your state return until your state is ready to be filed. To do this:
      1. Sign in to taxes.hrblock.com
      2. Complete your federal taxes as normal.
      3. Once you get to the Choose the state you want to prepare or State Welcome screen, use the File tab at the top of the screen.
      4. Use the Next button, then continue through the rest of the screens until you’ve filed.
      5. When your state is ready:
        1. Sign in to taxes.hrblock.com
        2. Go to the State tab and continue your state return.
        3. When you’re done, go to the File tab option to file your state return.
    • Option B: File your federal and state return today – however, because your state isn’t ready to file, you might need to file an amendment. To do this, you’ll just need to complete your taxes as normal. Then, if you later find out you need to amend, here’s what you’ll do:
      1. Sign in to taxes.hrblock.com.
      2. Choose File an amended return
      3. Follow the steps to update your return and submit your amendment.

Check back often! As we learn about how the states will apply the rule, we’ll update the information in the linked document above. As always, it’s good to check to see if your state has guidance on how to handle the unemployment income exclusion.

If you’re e-filing your return, the IRS will verify your identity by using your personal tax information from the previous year. Specifically, when you file your return, the IRS compares these two things to see if they match:

  • The prior-year adjusted gross income (AGI) you entered
  • Your prior-year tax records

If these don’t match, the IRS will reject your return. In most cases, you can easily fix this issue and successfully e-file your return again.

How do you get your AGI from last year? You can locate your prior-year AGI on your 2022 return on Form 1040, Line 11.

How to Locate Your Previous Year AGI If You Don’t Have Access to Your Return

If you can’t find your prior-year AGI, you have a couple of options. You’ll need to request a copy of a return for 2022 from the IRS, which you can do any of these ways:

  • View or download a transcript of your return online at www.irs.gov.
  • Go to www.irs.gov and request a hard copy transcript of your return be mailed to you. This will take 5-10 business days.
  • Call the IRS at 800-908-9946 and request a hard copy transcript be mailed to you. This will take 5-10 business days.

If you and your spouse filed jointly last year, your spouse’s AGI will be the same as yours. If your spouse had a different AGI, you’ll need his or her information to get their AGI from the IRS.

After you have the correct AGI, go to the overview of your online account and complete these steps:

  1. At Check Status, next to the federal e-file rejected, click Next Steps.
  2. From the Check Your E-file Status screen, click Next.
  3. On the Review Your Rejection Messages screen, click Fix Issues.
  4. On the Correcting Your Federal Electronic Signature screen, click Next.
  5. You can now edit your last year’s AGI and/or PIN.
  6. After you edit those fields, click Continue to File.
  7. Click the E-file button.
  8. Click Next to continue through the e-file process.

If you’re having trouble signing into your H&R Block online account, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll have you back in the tax-filing business by the end of this page (or sooner).

Just looking for the login link? Go to hrblock.com and use the person icon in the upper right-hand corner to sign in or create a new account.

You can also bookmark the link at www.hrblock.com/login/, so you can access it again easily.

Quick Troubleshooting

Let’s double-check a few things before we go further:

  • Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive, so “jsmith” is different from “JSMITH.” Check your caps lock.
  • If you can’t remember your password, here’s what we’re looking for:
    • 8-30 characters
    • One uppercase letter
    • One lowercase letter
    • One number
    • One special character (Ex: $, #, %, or !)

If none of that helped, you’ve probably forgotten either your username or password. We don’t blame you — we have a hunch it’s been at least a year since you’ve used it.

Forgot Username/Password?

If you’re not on the Sign in screen yet, go to hrblock.com, use the Profile  icon in the upper right-hand corner of this screen, and choose Sign in to my account.

From the Sign in screen:

  1. Click on Forgot username/password? under the Password
  2. Enter your email, mobile number, or username. You’ll have three tries to enter the info for your account. (Go ahead and use up the three if you can’t remember the right one.)
    • If we couldn’t find your account after three tries, fill out the account lookup screen, hit Next, and you should be back on track.
  3. You’ll get a security code sent to the email or phone number you gave (to verify it’s really you).
  4. Enter that code into the Security code field you see on your screen and hit Next. (If you don’t have access to that email or phone anymore, click Try something else and follow those steps.)
  5. Now, you should see a screen with the account we found for you. If there’s more than one, choose the one with the most recent Last Sign In date and click Reset Password.
  6. If you had to use Try something else in this process, you should go directly to Account Settings (once you’re signed in) and update your contact info so you can get back in next time.

Still need help?

If none of that helped, you can create a new account. You’ll just want to have a copy of your return from last year to make things easier this year. If you need a copy of your return from last year, you can request a transcript from the IRS instead. We know that might be frustrating, but we have to keep things secure around here.

H&R Block tax software CDs are no longer available to purchase. The CDs have fallen out of common use and represent significant environmental impacts. In addition, disk drives in home computers have become increasingly uncommon. For these reasons we no longer offer the CD.

Don’t worry, you can still buy and download our H&R Block tax software from our tax software page.

You can still do your taxes digitally without an H&R Block tax software CD

Even though we no longer offer the H&R Block tax software CD, the program you need is still available to download on our website. You should navigate to our tax software page and choose which H&R Block tax software meets your needs. You’ll find options for both employers and employees, as well as packages meant to assist investors and real estate owners.

You can still buy our H&R Block tax software in stores like Walmart or Best Buy. You’ll receive an activation code and instructions on how to download your H&R Block tax software. You won’t receive a CD, and you won’t need it.

The activation code grants you access to download the H&R tax software you purchased, but you will need to be connected to the internet for this. Keep in mind one benefit that comes with each option available: your H&R Block tax software comes with five free federal e-files.

You can check out our Ways to File Taxes page to review these and other options to file. These include filing yourself online, in office with a tax professional, and other options along with the H&R Block tax software. Remember, the CD will not be among those options.

Though the software from H&R Block helps you import last year’s tax return and tells you what you need, you still might have some questions about the process.

First, let’s start with the files you can import in H&R Block Tax Software. There are two types of files you can use to import your tax return:

  • You can import last year’s tax return data file from:
    • H&R Block software
    • TurboTax software
  • You can import a PDF copy last year’s return from any source, including:
    • H&R Block Tax Software
    • H&R Block Online
    • H&R Block tax office
    • TurboTax online or software
    • TaxAct Online
    • Any other tax prep company where you have a PDF copy of your prior-year return
    • A scanned PDF copy of your paper return

If you have both a tax data file and a PDF of your return, the tax data file will let us import more tax return data than a PDF of your return.

How to import last year’s tax return?

To import last year’s tax return to H&R Block Tax Software, follow these steps:

  1. On the My 2023 Taxes screen, click Start a Return.
  2. On the How do you want to import your taxes from last year? screen, choose the type of file you want to import last year’s tax return.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Choose the tax return file you want to import, or drag and drop the file if it’s a PDF. If the file you want isn’t listed, click Browse to find it.
    • H&R Block’s last year’s tax return files from last year have a .T22 extension.
    • TurboTax® files have a .tax2022 extension.
    • PDF files will have the .pdf extension.
  5. Click Import Selected File.
  6. On the successful import screen, click View Summary to see a summary of the info you’re importing.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Enter a file name for your return. The program will automatically save it the Documents/HRBlock folder.
    • You can also use the Browse button to save your return to a different folder.
  9. Click Save and Continue.

Even when it’s easy, filling out taxes can take a long time. The info on one form might not seem like much, but the more you have, the more time spent entering in those numbers. That’s why H&R Block offers photo capture to help speed up the process and finish your taxes faster. With photo capture, you can take a pic of your W-2 for a photo upload instead of entering in all your W-2 info manually.

How does photo upload of my W-2 work?

To use photo capture in H&R Block Software products:

  1. Take a pic of your W-2 with your phone.
  2. We’ll text you a secure link. You’ll only need internet access to use the link — no app required.
  3. Open the link on your phone.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Once the upload is done, confirm the data from your W-2 photo upload to make sure it’s all correct.

With that, you’ll be able to continue with your taxes and reach any refund you might deserve even sooner.

We won’t store or share your phone number with anyone, by the way. And as with any text, message and data rates might apply.
